Contemporary & Lyrical

CONTEMPORARY:  Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements, versatility and improvisation. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music. Pioneers of contemporary dance include Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. These contemporary artists all believed that dancers should have freedom of movement, allowing their bodies to express their innermost feeling.

LYRICAL: Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. Lyrical dance is a free moving style in which the dancers movement depicts the story of the lyrics.  It is based around choreography interpreted through feelings and emotions, though technique is crucial,  the interpretation of the music and the lyrics generally leads the movement from within. A solid, ballet-based technique is an essential component of this advanced style of dance. Ballet classe are required in conjunction with this class.

Dress Code:
Black Leotard, Tan Tights, Black Shorts or Pants, No loose fitting T-shirts, or sweatshirts may be worn. A tight fitting black shirt may be worn over a black leotard. Hair should be secured firmly in place for all classes. Dance is a disciplined art form and rules are part of that discipline and have to be followed.
